Unionization and Charter Schools

W06

Union organizing in California charter schools remains a growing trend with schools potentially more vulnerable to unionization in this challenging labor market. In this two-part workshop, two of the State's leading legal experts in this area will explore union organizing efforts and review rights and obligations of charter schools in responding to union campaigns and managing a labor relationship. You will also learn firsthand from leaders of one of the state's most prominent CMOs about their experience with unionization.

Robert Escalante is an experienced labor and employment attorney that has dedicated the last six years to serving as the General Counsel for the largest network of charter schools in Los Angeles. In that capacity, he provided counsel and representation in legal proceedings related to UTLA's six-year, unsuccessful campaign to organize the network's certificated staff. Robert has since shifted his practice to focus more generally to public service and labor and employment support for charter schools.
