Emergent Strategy: Principles for Leadership and Resilience

W04

Almost 30 years ago, the charter law was passed in California as a means to rethink what was possible if educators were given the flexibility to innovate and the agility to be responsive to the communities they serve. While there is a lot to celebrate across our collective spaces, we must acknowledge our world has changed radically. In fact, change appears to be speeding up, with seismic social, political, technological, and environmental shifts occurring around us. Leading a sustainable, responsive charter organization can feel impossible when the rules on the ground are changing this fast, and the future we are tasked with preparing students for is an undetermined one. Leadership in this moment requires deep, personal work to process the gravity of the changes we are living through and to understand how they are affecting our students, our families, and the adults who serve them.

This workshop will explore the principles of Emergent Strategy by Adrienne Marie Brown, which acknowledges the real power of change, and offers tools to be in the right relationship with it. Emergent Strategy practices strengthen imagination and the capacity to think beyond the limitations of socialization, beyond competition, binaries, and linear, short-term outcomes. The session is a sacred space for leaders seeking to re-center themselves and explore what's possible in our schools and communities in these dynamic times.
